Barbershops serve as a home of fresh cuts and community on the southside of Tallahassee, Florida. So it came as a shock to Marlon Williams when the state shuttered his Fade Barbershop in March due to COVID-19 emergency restrictions.

“You don’t know how you’re going to support your family or make sure you’re able to get income for your employees as well,” said Williams.

Since reopening in May, the cutting average of 20 heads a day dropped down to seven to 10 heads a day. Williams maintains an attitude of resilience through this uncertainty.

“We’re going to make it,” he said. “We just have to figure out a new way to make it.”
